Trout in the Classroom

RiverRidgeInstitute trout classroomEvery Spring, River Ridge Institute is host to Trout in the Classroom, a wonderful environmental education program serving students from across Tulare County. We provide a day-long immersion (excuse the pun) in Water Ecology for 3rd-to-7th graders that includes Watershed Structure and Function, River Ecology, Water Conservation and Sustainable Landscapes.

In this program, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife provides the trout eggs. The Kaweah Fly Fishers, a volunteer group of flyfishing enthusiasts, picks up eggs and assists teachers in preparing temperature-controlled tanks in which to raise the fish. Students learn about embryology, development, water quality and fish behavior as they watch the eggs hatch and then grow in their classrooms. When ready for release, the trout fry are brought to River Ridge Ranch where the children let them swim free in the North Fork of the Tule River.

Take a glimpse at this short documentary film by photojournalist David Karnowski about this unique way for children to experience a day on the ranch and learn about our precious watershed.
